Adjusting your Ring doorbell’s motion settings will give you more personalised notifications
Walk down the street and there is a good chance you will see at least one Ring Video Doorbell monitoring the outside of a home. As far as video doorbells go, they are pretty popular options, which isn’t all that surprising given it was the first company to introduce one.
As great as they are for keeping an eye on the front of your home though, sometimes the notifications are a little much. If you don’t want to know each and every time someone walks passed on the sidewalk, here’s how to adjust motion settings on your Ring Video Doorbell to make sure you only get an alert when there’s a problem.

- Your smartphone or tablet
- The Ring app

- Tap on the Motion Settings tile.
- Choose Motion Sensitivity.

How to adjust motion settings on Ring Video Doorbell
There are various adjustments you can make to your Ring Video Doorbell motion settings in order to make them work better for you. We have covered off Bird’s Eye View in a separate feature, which we recommend turning on if you have a compatible device, and you can also use the Home and Away modes, as well as turn on person and package detection.
There are other motion settings you can adjust to make sure you only get the alerts for what you want though. Person and package detection falls under Smart Alerts and this requires a Ring Protect subscription.
You can also adjust the motion sensitivity though, as well as set up Motion Schedules. There’s the option to change the Motion Frequency too, which is where you set how often your device checks for motion. We’ve covered them all off below to help you change your motion settings for your Ring Video Doorbell to get what you want out of it.

- Open the Ring app and head to your Video Doorbell’s settings
Open the Ring app on your smartphone or tablet and tap on your Ring Video Doorbell. From here, tap on the setting cog in the top right corner and select the Motion Settings tile from the grid.
- Adjust Motion Sensitivity
First up, it’s worth adjusting the Motion Sensitivity if you find you’re getting too many false positives. Scroll down in the Motion Settings tile and tap on Motion Sensitivity from the list. From here, you can choose to increase of decrease motion sensitivity. Move the slider left for less alerts and right for more alerts. You can also adjust Package Sensitivity here.
- Turn on Smart Alerts
We have covered Smart Alerts separately as we mentioned but these are worth turning on if you have a Ring Protect subscription and you want to make sure you only get notifications for specific things, like people being detected or packages. You’ll see the Smart Alerts option in the Motion Settings tile, tap on it and follow the instructions to set each one up.
- Set up Motion Schedules
Motion Schedules allow you to avoid getting motion alerts during certain times and days. If you know your bin men always come between 7:30am and 7:45am on a Thursday for example, you can set up a Motion Schedules to stop alerts during this time every week. From the Motion Settings tile, scroll down to Motion Schedules and select ‘Add Schedule’.
- Change Motion Frequency
Last but not least, you might want to consider changing the motion frequency on your Ring Video Doorbell. This will determine how often your device checks for motion. From the Motion Settings tile, tap on Advanced Settings and then Motion Frequency. Choose between Frequently, Regularly and Periodically.
