In its most basic sense, the On/Off button doesn't exist on most Apple products. In fact, Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson he refused such a switch on the iPhone because he wanted to believe in an afterlife. But we suspect there was a bit of Apple hubris involved here too, assuming we'd never tire of using its products.

Same goes for the Apple TV; you won't find a power button on its remote like the ones on most TV wands. But this can make matters confusing when it comes to powering down the electronics for the night or switching to another HDMI device.

Missing manual: Everything you need to know about Apple TV

Below we'll walk you through turning the Apple TV off, for all the different available models. The key thing to know is that you're technically not turning it "off", but rather putting it to sleep. We'll also explain how to adjust the Apple TV's auto-sleep settings.

How to turn off Apple TV 4K and 4th-Gen model

There are two ways to do this. The first is as simple as this:

1. Press and hold the Home button (that's the one with the pic of a TV on it) for a second.
2. When the menu pops up, click Sleep Now.

Easy, right? The Apple TV is now as "off" as it can be, short of unplugging it completely. To turn it back on again, all you need to do is hit any button on the remote.

If you're using an earlier model of the Apple TV and want to put it to sleep, you have to instead hold down the Play/Pause button on the remote for five seconds, after which the TV box will automatically power down.

Should the above not work for any reason, you also have the option of powering down the Apple TV in the settings. Just do the following:

1. Open the Settings menu from the Apple TV homescreen.
2. Scroll down to Sleep Now and press on it. The Apple TV will immediately power down.

Again – easy. Same procedure for all models as far back as the 2nd Gen Apple TV. For the 1st Gen and Apple TV Take Two, you need to instead select Standby in the Settings menu to turn the TV off.
