Abode's home security system gets smarter with more specific routines

The company's CUE conditions add another layer of control

Abode is beefing up its automation

For a while now, Abode has been offering a professional-grade smart home security system that lets users combine an array of smart home sensors with their own automations.

Now, the company is upping the ante by adding another layer to its automations with a new software update that adds a feature called CUE - short for custom engine. Essentially, CUE adds conditions for smart home automations.

As you're likely aware, most automations run this way: When this happens, then do this. CUE's conditions add another layer on top of that: When this happens, then do this, IF this happens. In practice, this would be like changing, "When I leave home, lock the door" to, "When I leave home, lock the door if I'm 50 feet away from the house."

There's an added bit of complexity there that could let you add more nuance to your automations. Even better, automations are gaining support for multiple triggers and actions. So you could do something like, "When I leave home or its past 9pm, then lock the door." Or, "When it's past 11pm, turn off the lights and lock the door." Users will also gain the ability to create, edit, manage and disable these automations via the mobile web or the Abode app.

Triggers are also getting a slight update. Users can already use phone location, Abode system status and schedules to trigger events, but now they can also use sunrise and sunset as triggers, as well as "light outside" and "dark outside" triggers.

Abode's new software update, which includes the new CUE feature and additional triggers, is available to all Abode users now.
