Smart home security specialist Abode has announced its Gen 2 Gateway, which improves on the original by throwing in Z-Wave Plus and 4G connectivity. Plus, there's some pretty big HomeKit promises too.

The company has stated it is "100% committed to bringing HomeKit to users across our entire ecosystem of products and plan to have additional news to announce soon."

Abode's smart home security system lets users combine an array of smart home sensors with their own automations. It recently added another layer through CUE - short for custom engine; which adds conditions for smart home automations.

Rather than the when this happens, do this approach, CUE's conditions add another layer on top, so you could do something like, "When I leave home after 7pm, turn the alarm on, turn off the lights and lock the door."

The improved Z-Wave Plus connectivity is long overdue and the 4G connectivity adds a cellular backup to the system should the Wi-Fi go down.

Abode's system is both Alexa and Google Assistant compatible - as well as playing nicely with IFTTT - and the improvements only enhance what was already a strong modular based home security system.

The new Gen 2 Gateway, which also has Zigbee connectivity, boasts a 93db+ siren and a back-up battery. Paid plans cost from $10 a month - but there are free plans too that include three days of media storage for free.

If you've got a Gen 1 Gateway and a load of sensors already hooked up, you can buy just the new Gateway for $199. The Abode Essentials Kit is $279 for the basic plan, $299 for the Connect bundle, and $359 for the Secure bundle.
