Amazon unveils Alexa Skill Connections for more powerful voice controls

Printing and booking will be even easier

Now Alexa can mix up its skills

Hot off the back of the Alexa September event, Amazon has announced another new feature – Skill Connections – which offers the ability to pair Alexa skills together for the first time.

While multiple commands was one of the new features unveiled last month, Amazon’s voice assistant can now mix and mash up skills to get jobs done. Alexa Skill Connections offer the option to do one of three things right now: print, make a reservation or book a ride.

This could be using the HP skill to print our your tickets, once you’ve just placed a voice order using Seetickets, for example.

Until now, once a skill had completed its action, it was goodnight from Alexa, and this is the first time that skills are able to talk directly to each other. It’s not carte blanche quite yet, as Amazon is limiting to just a handful of outcomes. That should also allay the inevitable security concerns, about skills automating data exchanges – for now at least.

Skill Connections are heading to developers right now. Willing devs are being offered the chance to make connections with the HP app for printing, reservations with Open Table and taxi bookings with Uber. Other obvious players – namely Canon and Lyft – are still in the works.

We’ll keep you updated when the new skills land.
