Apple introduced the new HomeKit architecture in 2022, with the aim of improving the experience of using HomeKit devices.
But while the upgrade to this new architecture has been optional so far, that’s about to change, as the iOS 18.4 suggests that users will soon be forced to upgrade to the new platform.
The new HomeKit architecture was first introduced with iOS 16.2, but it was pulled shortly after its release due to compatibility issues. Apple then re-introduced it via iOS 16.4 in February 2023, and it has remained an optional upgrade for Apple Home systems since then.
According to 9to5Mac, the latest beta of iOS 18.4 (beta 3) suggests that the Home app will no longer work with the old HomeKit architecture.
Users who haven’t upgraded yet are seeing a message that states support “will end soon” and users need to “update now to avoid interruptions.”
It’s unclear if this change will take effect with the final release of iOS 18.4 or a future update, but it’s likely that iOS 19 will only be compatible with the new HomeKit architecture.
iOS 18.4 is currently in beta testing and is expected to be released next month.
If you’re not sure if you’ve updated or not already, then you can check in the Home app. You probably have if you have auto-updates turned on, across your Apple devices.
