August's smart doorbell got a makeover

August was bought by lock company giant Assa Abloy back in 2017. You'd think the company and its tech would just get subsumed - it's already doing smart locks with Yale, which sits within Assa A bloy - but it turns out that's not the case.

Dave Zatz has uncovered some leaked images of a new August doorbell, which we know will be called the View thanks to some trademark filings. The view looks to retain some of the old August Doorbell Cam Pro's design, but without the ugly.

Buying guide: The best smart doorbells

The August Doorbell Cam Pro is a good doorbell, but its square, bulky shape was a real pain for a lot of people. It was too big to install on some people's door frames, which meant you had to put it on the wall next to your door - if you even had the wiring there to place it.

The View fixes that by going tall and narrow, which should help it be installed on a lot more people's front doors. It also looks much better, and it could even match the Nest Hello as the most attractive video doorbell. There's also a new dedicated home chime, which both Ring and Nest also offer, though August's new option is much more stylish.

We've reached out to August for comment and will update this story when we hear back. We don't yet know pricing or what new features could be packed into the View, but we probably won't have to wait long with CES around the corner.
