The $199 speaker, which brings a heavy focus on video calling and comes with built-in Alexa, is currently $99 on Amazon, though the bigger, Portal+ model is still priced at $349.99. The sale appears to relate to both the white and black variations of the device, with the deal running through until 12 May. You know, because nothing says, "I love you, Mum," like a smart display.
And interestingly, through Facebook, you can also bundle two Portal devices (as long as one of them is a Portal+ and receive a total $200 off). Amazon is also offering an optional bundle for $123.99, which includes the speaker and the Amazon Smart Plug. However, with the Plug retailing at $24.99, this doesn't actually present a saving over it being bought separately.
Either way, with the Echo Show currently coming in at $189.99, this deal makes the Portal by far the most affordable smart display housing Alexa. However, is the Facebook device superior to the second-gen Show?
Well, when we reviewed it back in February, we said: "Facebook Portal is a smart speaker that puts all its focus on video chatting. The result is a limited, but technologically impressive gadget that in some ways puts the Echo Show to shame. Facebook's tunnel vision may be to its detriment though, as the Portal is lacking in wider features."
There's a bit of time to weigh up your options with this deal, but there's always the chance you won't be able to pick up the Portal at such a cut rate until, maybe, Black Friday. If you need a video-first smart speaker, or two, now's a good time to pull the trigger.
