Sonos could be set to launch its own voice assistant, to sit alongside Alexa and Google Assistant.

First spotted over on Reddit by the guys at Voicebot, the new Sonos voice assistant has been touted by the multi-room audio giant as an alternative to the famous voice duo currently on offer.

However, rather than a rival to Amazon's Alexa or the Google Assistant, the Sonos assistant will sit alongside your voice assistant of choice.

And, unlike Alexa or Google's digital butlers, the Hey Sonos voice features will be localized on your Sonos network; no contact to the internet or the cloud is said to be involved.

That means that it's most likely to be used solely for Sonos-specific voice commands, rather than controlling your smart home devices.

Think grouping speakers, changing the volume, skipping tracks and so on.

As mentioned, both the Google Assistant and Alexa are already available on a wide range of the latest Sonos speakers such as the Sonos One, Sonos Arc, Sonos Five and the two portable speakers from the brand: the Sonos Move and Sonos Roam.

However, with all those speakers you can't have both voice assistants in operation - you need to choose the one you want using the Sonos S2 app.

So, if the touted Sonos voice assistant does see the light of day, it will be the first time that users have been able to bark two different wake words to their Sonos smart speakers.
