The Homey Energy Dongle, which was announced at the end of last year alongside a new suite of software features, is now shipping.
Priced at €39, the Energy Dongle can provide European Homey users with real-time insights into their home’s energy consumption.
And by Europe, I mean Europe. The likes of Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary can all get involved as their smart meters have the P1 port needed for the Dongle.
In the UK, the Energy Dongle will not work, but the Homey Energy platform works with various optical energy meter readers from the likes of Frient, Aotec and Emporia.
Back the the Energy Dongle though and it’s a P1-compatible device that connects directly to a home’s smart meter, streaming live electricity, gas, and even water usage (where supported) to the Homey Pro or Homey Cloud platform.
The Dongle consolidates data from energy meters, smart plugs, solar inverters, and other power-monitoring devices.
The launch of the Homey Energy Dongle coincides with the rollout of Homey’s enhanced Energy Monitoring functionality, which gives users a full overview of their energy flows in a clean, easy-to-read interface.
The Energy tab supports a variety of third-party monitoring devices, but the Homey Energy Dongle is the simplest plug-and-play solution for homes with a P1 smart meter.
Once you’ve got it plugged in, you can enter your energy contract prices in the Homey app to see cost insights alongside kWh use values. Cost insights are available for daily, weekly, and monthly overviews and dynamic pricing will be supported soon after launch.
Beyond just tracking energy use, Homey allows users to automate their energy consumption using Homey Flow and Advanced Flow.
For example, users can set their EV to charge when electricity prices are off-peak, or turn off high-energy appliances during peak pricing periods.
The dongle connects via Wi-Fi and includes a built-in P1 splitter, meaning users can still connect an additional device – such as an EV charger load balancer – without requiring extra adapters.
Most newer smart meters provide enough power to run the dongle directly, but a USB-A to USB-C cable is included for meters that require external power.
It connects locally to Homey Pro or through the cloud to both the free and premium tiers of Homey Cloud.
The Homey Energy Dongle is shipping today and available for €39; to order visit Homey’s website.
Athom, the Dutch-based brand behind Homey, was acquired by LG last year, who have plans to integrate Homey’s software into its ThinQ platform.
LG assures us that Homey will remain independent though, continuing to cater to power users and smart home enthusiasts – much like Samsung has done with SmartThings.
Homey’s growing smart home ecosystem – powered by community-driven integrations and LG’s backing – makes it a compelling contender for managing connected devices in a privacy-focused, locally controlled environment.
