Software updates for security cameras usually fix bugs or occasionally introduce new features, but Ring has surprised us all with a significant image quality upgrade.
Two of its existing models – the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro and the Ring Spotlight Cam Pro – are now receiving a bump in resolution.
Originally launched with Full HD (1080p) resolution, both cameras are now capable of recording in 2K resolution, thanks to a free update rolled out earlier this week.
This upgrade enhances the clarity and detail of recorded footage without any additional cost to existing users. This 2K bump isn’t limited to newly purchased devices, it’s available to all current owners of these camera models.
While Ring hasn’t provided extensive technical details, it must have meant that the cameras’ hardware already supported higher resolution but had been capped at 1080p.
Following the update, the Ring app now includes a new video quality option, allowing users to toggle between 1080p and 2K settings.
The upgraded 2K footage is powered by Ring Vision technology, which utilizes a combination of hardware and software enhancements. This includes features like motion smoothing and optimized color and contrast for better overall video quality.
Alongside the resolution boost, some Ring camera models are also gaining Vehicle Detection as a new feature. This enhancement joins People Detection as part of the brand’s intelligent detection offerings. However, this feature requires an active Ring Home subscription plan to function.
Ring also had some news over in Vegas at CES, where it was announced that it had teamed up with fire safety brand Kidde to incorporate smoke and CO2 alarms inside the Ring app.
The Kidde Smart Smoke Alarm with Ring, and the Kidde Smart Smoke and CO Alarm with Ring were both on show at the big tech expo and will go on sale in April.
Ring is also launching a $5 monthly subscription service alongside the alarms, offering 24/7 professional monitoring and access to emergency dispatchers.
The subscription is optional though, users can still take advantage of the smoke alarm’s core functionality without extra fees – such as being alerted by notifications if an alarm is triggered.
