After nearly a decade of quirky lamp speakers, sneaky bookshelf units, and picture frames that could belt out Beyoncé, the Sonos and Ikea mash-up is officially over, with the Symfonisk line being phased out.
Sonos confirmed the breakup to The Verge, stating that once current inventory is gone, that’s it.
“Over the past eight years, we’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Ikea and are proud of what we’ve achieved,” said Sonos spokesperson Erin Pategas.
“Although our work together has largely wound down and we won’t be releasing new products as partners, we’ll continue to support every existing Symfonisk product so customers can keep enjoying great sound in their homes for many years to come.”
So while your Table Lamp speaker won’t suddenly go mute, you won’t be able to bulk out your Sonos system with any more of the affordable range. If you have been eyeing one of these speakers, now’s the time to pounce before stock disappears from Ikea shelves for good.
For Sonos fans, the Symfonisk range has been a bit of a hidden gem as you get full Sonos ecosystem integration at a price that didn’t make your wallet weep.
The Bookshelf speaker held its own against the OG Play:1 and Sonos One, and were an ideal budget option as a pair for surround sound rear drivers.
The Symfonisk line also filled a very specific niche: home theater surrounds that didn’t actually look like speakers, with the Symfonisk Picture Frame blending into decor, with its range of fancy panel covers.
Sonos is very much still trying to polish its much-criticized revamped app after a bumpy rollout last year.
Interim CEO Tom Conrad has said the company’s priority is fixing the basics and earlier this year, the multiroom audio specialist quietly killed off a long-rumored streaming video product, signalling a renewed focus on its core markets.
So, farewell Symfonisk. It was a weird, wonderful, and affordable experiment.
