The Sonos One launched in 2017 as the company’s first Alexa-powered smart speaker. Sonos is introducing a second-gen version for 2019, but the improvements are minor.

The Gen 2 model comes with an improved processor, more memory and support for Bluetooth LE.

It’s not clear to what extent the upgraded engine will improve performance, but the addition of BLE should simplify the first-time setup process. It’s possible the enhanced processor and memory will help when Google Assistant finally arrives on the speaker later this year.

There are also now four mics instead of the six found on the Gen 1, but this is more about efficiency; don’t expect Alexa to hear your any better on the Gen 2.

Sonos says it will continue to support the Gen 1 speaker with software updates

The Gen 2 Sonos One will be available from 7 March for $199, the same price as the original, while the Gen 1 model will be reduced to $179 from a few retailers.
