There is a new range of Tado smart heating in Europe which supports the Matter smart home protocol. Tado X, as the range is being called, includes a number of products, all of which have been designed to be simpler to set up and simpler to use, according to the company.
The Tado X system will run natively on a Thread mesh network and it joins Nest in being one of the select smart heating control systems to support the Matter protocol, allowing for a more seamlessly integrated smart home. Replacing traditional thermostats, the X system is designed to control a boiler, radiator valves and underfloor heating, cutting costs and energy consumption in the process.
There are five new products in the range – Smart Thermostat X, Smart Radiator Thermostat X, Wireless Temperature Sensor X, Heat Pump Optimizer X and the Bridge X. The Bridge X is optional and can act as a Thread border router for homes that don’t already have one. All the products then connect to the Tado app that offers smart scheduling a number of other “set and forget” features for easy control, though it is worth noting that some of the advanced energy management features are locked behind a subscription.
The X devices come with new display for a better user experience, while the Smart Radiator Thermostat X comes with a battery that can be recharged by a USB-C cable for convenience. The Heat Pump Optimizer takes care of heat pump control and efficiency – in case the name didn’t give it away – and it works with Smart Radiator Thermostat X and Smart Thermostat X for control over individual rooms and zones.
The Heat Pump Optimizer X can also act as a Thread border router and it will allow heat pumps from manufacturers like Atlantic, Vaillant, Saunier Duval, and Fujitsu to have control over individual rooms, The Verge reports.
According to Tado’s CPO and Co-founder Christian Deilmann: “In the past Smart Thermostats were largely adopted by those focussed on smart tech but tado X makes these devices more accessible to many more people and will have a bigger impact on bills and the renewable energy transition.”
The Tado X thermostats and the new X temperature sensor are all compatible with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit. However, it’s important to note that the Tado X range is not compatible with Tado’s other ranges as they “use different technology platforms, despite offering similar functionalities”, Tado says on its website.
It also says: “Tado X is not compatible with earlier Tado devices and they can’t be used together on the same account”. It means that while the Tado X range will be able to communicate with non-Tado devices that are also Matter-enabled like Tado X, it can’t be added to setups that use Tado V3+ and earlier.
