The week in smart home: Cheaper Samsung Galaxy Home could be coming

It's heating up as we head into CES

Mini Samsung Galaxy Home may launch

CES 2019 officially starts next week, but things are already kicking off. We'll be in Vegas this weekend, where the news will be pouring in, and we're expecting it to be a huge year for the smart home.

This week we exclusively revealed Lenovo's new smart speaker, which will run Alexa; GE announced some new Google Assistant-compatible bulbs; Klipsch launched some new smart soundbars; and August's new smart doorbell leaked.

It was also a big week for The Ambient - our very first birthday.

Here's what else you missed.

Samsung may be working on a cheaper Galaxy Home speaker

Samsung's first smart speaker still hasn't launched, but we're hearing that a second Galaxy Home is in the works. According to a report from Sammobile, the company is working on another speaker that carries the model number SM-V310 (the Galaxy Home has the model number SM-V510). The publication says the speaker will definitely come in black and speculates that it might be a cheaper model, but by its own admission this is just guesswork.

A cheaper speaker would make sense: Samsung has gone on record saying the Galaxy Home will have a premium price, so it won't be competing with the likes of the Echo Dot or Google Home Mini. It may be more in the bracket of the HomePod, so Samsung could struggle here. A cheaper speaker will make it more competitive.

Google Assistant lets you make easy donations

Google has added a new feature to the Assistant that lets users make easy donations with their phone or smart speaker. So long as you're in the US and you've enabled payments in Google Assistant, you can say, "Hey Google, make a donation" and then dictate the exact amount and the charity you'd like to donate to.

There's a select number of charities available for this, and if you make the donation using a smart speaker you'll still need to confirm it on your phone.

Kohler creates the ultimate high-tech bathroom - complete with smart toilet

Kohler, maker of bathroom and kitchen fixtures, introduced some interesting voice-enabled tech at last year's CES. This year, it's showing off the Veil Lighted Collection, a lighting collection for mirrors, baths - and even an "intelligent toilet". It all works in conjunction with Signify (previously known as Philips Lighting) and can all be controlled using Alexa or Google Assistant.

You can even have the lighting change to match your circadian rhythm so you sleep and wake up more naturally. You can read more on Kohler's website, and we'll be dipping in (sadly not literally) for a look at CES.
