Boosted upload speeds also now available on all plans
Virgin Media O2 has set a new milestone in the UK broadband landscape by rolling out its residential 2Gbps broadband service, Gig2.
Gig2 is the latest speed upgrade from Virgin Media, promising to revolutionise your home internet experience with speeds twice as fast as its predecessor, Gig1, and 28 times faster than the national average.
At full pelt you’d be able to download an Oppenheimer in 4K in just over 4 minutes or grab Call of Duty Modern Warfare III for your PS5 in about 16 minutes. Those times would be over 2 hours and nearly 8 hours respectively with the national average.
Powered by cutting-edge XGS-PON technology, Gig2 operates on a full-fibre network, courtesy of Virgin Media O2’s partnership with nexfibre, which is available in almost a million homes now in towns and cities across the UK including London, Cardiff, Milton Keynes, Sheffield, Manchester and Glasgow.
To get in on the Gig2 action you’ll need the new Hub 5x, Virgin Media’s most energy efficient router to date, made from 100% recycled plastic, which also boasts Wi-Fi 6.
The Hub 5x also comes with a 10Gbps port which will be able to support even faster speeds in the future.
Virgin Media O2 has also announced that it is the first major provider in the UK to offer symmetrical download and upload speeds across all speed tiers as an optional add-on for customers.
This premium add-on, costing £6 a month, is available across all Virgin Media speed tiers, ranging from 50Mbps to 2Gbps,
Gig2 is priced at £84 per month.
I’m currently testing Virgin’s Gig1 service and will be publishing our comprehensive review on The Ambient soon, so stay tuned.
