New acoustics and a new design for Ikea and Sonos' latest collaboration
The latest device from the Sonos and Ikea partnership has just gone live: the 2nd-gen Symfonisk Table Lamp speaker.
Looking a lot like the original – at least in terms of the base – but with some new finishes and fittings on offer, the new Ikea Sonos Symfonisk Table Lamp speaker will be available from Ikea in the US and Europe from 12 October.
If you’re familiar with the original Ikea Sonos Symfonisk speakers, you’ll probably notice that it’s up top where the major differences are found.
The new Table Lamp speaker now doesn’t come as a singular device any longer. Like the recently launched Symfonisk Picture Frame speaker, the emphasis is on personalization.
The lamp base (black or white) and the lamp shade will be sold separately and you can choose two lamp shades in different styles and colors, available in textile or glass lampshade, in either black or white.
We’re told that the lamp speaker also supports a broader range of light bulbs thanks to the added E26/E27 socket.
But it’s not just an aesthetic overhaul for the Ikea speaker; the speaker features a revamped acoustic architecture, which uses a custom waveguide, designed to create a great sound experience from any angle.
“Since launching the first Symfonisk Table Lamp speaker, we learned a lot about how and where they are being used.” explained Stjepan Begic, product owner at IKEA of Sweden
“For example, a lot of people use the lamp speaker on a nightstand, which led us to create a new, slightly smaller lamp base.
“We’re now also offering customers more design choices, making the lamp speaker a better fit for their individual homes.”
Guide: Sonos tips and tricks
Obviously, these new speakers will be able to integrate into a Sonos multi-room audio system, and AirPlay 2 is on board too, for pairing with other Apple-compatible speakers.
Pricing in the US will be $140 for the speaker lamp base. It’s $29 for the textile shade or $39 for the glass shade.
