Nanoleaf’s latest starter kit lets you create Sonic the Hedgehog wall art
Nanoleaf’s smart lights are one of the easiest ways to turn a wall into a statement and now the company has just announced a kit that lets you throw retro video game character Sonic the Hedgehog up on a wall.
The new Nanoleaf Shapes Starter Kit – Sonic Limited Edition is an official tie-in with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a movie that hits theaters next week.
Much like a classic Lego kit, this pack lets you recreate multiple stars from the series. Shift around the pieces, select a different playlist item in the Nanoleaf app, and you can turn Sonic into Tails or Knuckles.
Guide: The best Nanoleaf designs
The three characters are made using Nanoleaf’s familiar triangular panels. However, where the classic starter kits contain either standard or mini sizes, this Sonic Limited Edition includes a mix.
There are four of the larger panels, 28 of the smaller type. It’s available in the UK for £299.99.
While that may sound a lot, we are getting a decent bundle-style discount here. Bought separately the panels alone would cost £444, and the pack naturally includes a controller module and power supply.
How Nanoleaf works
New to Nanoleaf? The 32 panels are connected using linker bridges – little strips that plug into points on the back – and each panel has a mounting plate that sticks to the wall with the help of a piece of double-sided tape.
As such, you should have a think before deciding which of the three characters you’d rather have on your wall longer-term.
The Nanoleaf app has a Sonic 2 “playlist”, setting each panel to the correct colour without having to programme them manually.
And if you get bored of that look, they can be switched to any color you like.

The panels can also be set to reflect the dominant colours on your PC or Mac screen, using the Screen Mirror setting, while the Rhythm mode reacts to sound and music.
This used to require a separate rhythm module, but the latest Nanoleaf generation controller now has a built-in microphone for the job. The panels are also touch-sensitive, able to double as gesture controllers for other smart home kit.
Nanoleaf’s Sonic Limited Edition start kit is available now. Early reviews of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie suggest it is perfectly adequate (not bad for a video game adaptation) so Nanoleaf’s first movie tie-in may have been a smart one.
