New Wi-Fi only hub goes live in new 3-piece starter kit
Smart DIY security specialist Abode has unveiled a new entry-level proposition: the Abode Security Kit, which is the company’s most affordable system to date.
REVIEWED: Abode Security Kit review
The Abode Security Kit comprises of a hub, a door/window sensor and a keyfob for $159.99 / £198. You can then add as many devices and sensors from Abode’s ever expanding arsenal as you wish.
Unlike the existing – and more expensive Abode Essentials Gateway (2nd-gen) and Iota powered systems – the new Security Kit is powered by a new Wi-Fi hub, that does without Z-Wave or Zigbee to save users money.

The new Security Hub therefore means you can’t control additional third-party sensors with as much freedom as you can with its more expensive older siblings, but there is still the option to sync up with Alexa or the Google Assistant for more complicated routines and automations; although sadly no HomeKit this time around though.
However, Abode has native syncing with Sonos and Bose within the app, along with an updated Nest integration that went live earlier this month.
The Security Hub packs in a battery back up option and also features a built in 93dB siren should the alarm be triggered. It talks to Abode’s various array of sensors via the brand’s own proprietary RF connectivity.
Abode has a plethora of security devices available to expand the Security Kit including different models of motion sensors (including one with a camera built in), doorbells, security cameras, glass break sensors (acoustic and vibration), a water leak sensor, smoke alarm monitor, indoor and outdoor sirens, a panic button, plus a variety of different sizes and shapes of door/window sensors, so no ingress need be left unprotected.
Everything is controlled and monitored through the free Abode app and there are also professional monitoring options and extras such as video recording and storage, detailed mobile event alerts, intelligent person tracking, pet and package detection starting from $7 per month.
The Abode Security Kit is on sale now direct from Abode for $159.99 / £198. Customers in the US can currently get an extra $20 off through an early bird promotion.
