First there was 10, then there were 5, and now there are 8 inches for the Echo Show display. Amazon has announced its new mid-sized smart display – the Echo Show 8.

The latest addition to the Echo Show family, the Show 8 has an 8-inch HD display in front, a fabric clad speaker behind, and a built-in camera cover – the first Show with this privacy feature, all for $119.99.

The Show 8 slots right in the middle between the flagship Echo Show, priced at $229, and the little sibling Echo Show 5, available for $90, with each member sharing the same design aesthetic.

All three have the same capabilities of an Alexa with a screen, including video calling, a smart home control panel, visual feedback on questions, and, of course, watching movies and TV with Prime Video.

Coming to the Show is a new software feature – “drop in on all.” This command starts a group video/audio chat with anyone in your family that owns an Echo device.

Plus, FreeTime – Amazon’s all-you-can-eat content buffet for kids – is finally coming to the Show devices. Presumably this means you can let your kids watch cartoons to their hearts' content, knowing they're only watching age-appropriate shows.

The Echo Show has a built-in Zigbee hub to control smart home devices, too, which the Show 5 doesn't have. There's no word on the Show 8's smart capabilities yet, though we'll report back once we have more details.

As you might expect from the pricing details of the rest of the family, the Echo Show 8 will cost $119.99 and goes up for pre-order today, 25 September. It joins the new Echo Studio and plenty more.
