CES 2022: DIY security setup was first touted in 2019
Waaaaaay back at CES 2019, Arlo, the company best known for its smart security cameras, announced a complete home security system.
Alas, that never saw the light of day but now, three years later at CES 2022, we’re finally being treated to the launch that never was.
The Arlo Security System comprises of just two parts; a security hub with an integrated keypad and a multi-purpose sensor.
Capable of eight different sensing functions, Arlo is banking on the multi-purpose sensor to set its smart home security alarm system apart from rivals such as the 2nd-gen Ring Alarm, Abode and Simplisafe.
The multi-purpose sensor can detect motion, door/window openings and tilt, water leaks, light/temperature changes, and T3 and T4 smoke/CO alarm patterns.
The sensor won’t just send alerts to your phone – it can also work with other Arlo products. So if it detects someone opening a window, it can send an alert to a nearby Arlo camera to start recording.
The keypad/hub combo also houses a siren and uses NFC for quick alarming and disarming.
Everything is managed through the Arlo Secure app and there are premium plans available which include professional monitoring and the like.
There’s no word on whether the Arlo Security System will work with HomeKit or digital assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant, but its cameras (mostly) do, so we’d presume it will.
There’s also no word on pricing or availability as of yet; let’s hope we get an update quicker than 3 years this time round.
Arlo also used CES 2022 to confirm it will be part of the Matter smart home ecosystem.
The Matter name will appear on all compatible smart home devices in the future, with the plan being it will be easier for consumers to identify devices that will work within their smart home ecosystem; whether that be Alexa, HomeKit, Google’s Assistant, SmartThings, or any others who join the party.
The likes of Nanoleaf, Eve, Apple, Google, Aqara, Samsung and Amazon have already signed up so Arlo is in good company.
