The company may be continuing its expansion beyond thermostats
Ecobee could be on the cusp of launching its first-ever smart video doorbell.
That’s if a leaked image from ZatzNotFunny is anything to go by, anyway, with the outlet showing off what appears to be an Ecobee-stamped doorbell, complete with a single-button front, black finish and white edges.
The doorbell in the image also features a green-lit status light, as well as two holes below the camera – likely to be microphones. Aside from what we can see here, though, there’s really not much to go off.
We don’t have any indications of the internal camera’s specs, or whether it will be battery-powered or wired, for example, nor do we have any idea regarding features such as AI detection or support for the likes of Alexa, Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant.
Given the rest of Ecobee’s lineup does link up nicely with those assistants, it’s almost a given that any potential doorbell would include support for the latter, but the rest is a guessing game at this stage.
Naturally, we’d expect it to slot neatly into the Ecobee setup, though, which now incorporates sensors and cameras, as well as making the thermostat the defacto smart hub.
Given this expansion into other smart home product categories – something that has accelerated since the company was acquired by Generac – the release of a doorbell would make plenty of sense.
Just when Ecobee would choose to launch it is another mystery, however. It could be rolled out soon, as we approach the holiday season, or it could be one that’s saved for CES 2023 and the new year. Of course, although it appears unlikely, it’s also possible it isn’t to be released at all.
Still, if it does, it would represent another big-name brand expanding its reach to the video doorbells – and that can only be a positive as Matter begins its rollout.
