Chinese smart home specialist Ezviz has unveiled the SD7, a touchscreen controller designed to make management of an Ezviz smart security system easier.
It’s essentially a 7-inch tablet, with a 1024 × 600 IPS touch screen display, powered by a 4600mAh battery (which charges via USB-C).
It’s got a microphone and speaker built-in for 2-way talking, and you can sync up to 30 Ezviz devices to it.
It’s designed to work exclusively with Ezviz security cameras and doorbells, such as the C8W Pro and the DB2.
However, because it’s locked into solely the Ezviz system – and doesn’t open its doors to the likes of Sonos, Hue and Ring like brands like Brilliant, Rithum and Sonoff do with their smart home controllers – it begs the question as to why you’d pay £130 for a device when an app on on existing iPad or Android tablet could do the job?
Ezviz cameras are also capable of streaming on smart displays such as the Echo Show.
However, brands like Control4 and Crestron have branded control panels that cost a heck of a lot more than the SD7, so I guess that Ezviz hopes that there will be an audience of loyal Ezviz users ready to take the £130-plunge (US pricing is still TBC).
Measuring 180.3 × 111.6 × 15.6 mm, and working over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, it can be wall mounted or carried around the house and put on a shelf with its built-in stand.
Obviously, if you wall mount you’ll either have to have the USB-C cable permanently wired in, or take it off every couple of days (I’m guessing, from the battery size) to charge.
The Ezviz SD7 is available now direct from Ezviz, or from Amazon.
