UPDATE: This is now official at CES 2018 - the Lenovo Smart Tabs

Lenovo is set to unveil a new smart speaker, The Ambient has learned, and we've stumbled across some images that prove it.

Like the Google Assistant-powered Lenovo Smart Display, Lenovo's next smart speaker also has a screen - but unlike that speaker, this screen can be detached and used as a tablet. The tablet runs Android, we've confirmed, however - and here's where things get interesting - one promo image shows Alexa running on the display.

There is, of course, an Alexa app for Android, but we can see Alexa running in Show Mode here, which has so far been exclusive to Amazon's Fire tablets. Show Mode essentially morphs the tablet into an Echo Show, and it looks like you'll be able to do this on Lenovo's new speaker too.

We haven't been able to confirm how Google Assistant will work, but we have seen the tab running Google apps like Google Drive, YouTube and the Chrome browser - so expect some level of Assistant functionality.

In fact, you'll have full access to the Google Play Store, meaning you can download apps as you would on any other Android tablet.

Lenovo's new smart speaker has a detachable Android tablet

The tablet measures 9.53 x 6.57 inches, while the speaker sits at 2.58 inches tall. It's interesting to see Lenovo go the route of having a full tablet experience. Google's Smart Displays, including Lenovo's own, have run a pared-down OS tailored for a smart home experience, whereas Lenovo now seems to be trying to offer the best of both worlds.

Will it work? Do people want a full Android tablet they can dock? Lenovo's transformer is an interesting idea, that's for sure. We don't yet know when the company will make all of this official, but CES is likely. Hopefully we'll get a name for it too.
