Major CSA milestone hit and now it's over to smart home brands
The Connective Standards Alliance has released Matter 1.0 into the world, meaning we could be just days away from seeing the first Matter smart home devices going on sale.
The launch of a specification isn’t something that would normally generate much excitement outside of developer circles but Matter 1.0 is a big deal as it means that smart home brands can begin the process of getting their devices tested and certified for Matter.
Matter 1.0 brings authorized test labs for brands alongside the open-source SDK, test harnesses and tools and, crucially, production certification.
Basically, it means all of the tools and procedures are in place for brands – and don’t forget there are over 280 member companies involved – to get that ‘works with Matter’ sticker on their boxes, those boxes on store shelves and, most excitingly, those boxes into your home, where smart home setups will (please God, hopefully) be easier than ever.
There are a number of brands involved in an early-access program too – so we could be just days away from seeing Matter Certified smart home devices becoming available in the real world.
Remember, it doesn’t matter if you’re team Alexa or Google Home, or your run a HomeKit or SmartThings hub… Matter is designed to be platform and brand agnostic.
The process of adding devices in your chosen smart home ecosystem will differ slightly depending on what setup you use, but the key thing is it will be easy and not locked in.
Have a look at our comprehensive Matter smart home guide if you want to learn more (and take a look at our Thread guide too, as that will be a major factor in the Matter story).
There’s a big Matter launch event planned for 3rd November in Amsterdam, with a keynote and ‘demo area’; so we’d expect to see a bunch of Matter enabled devices there.
Stay tuned for some exciting updates.
