Millions of free users can fill their boots
Sonos speakers just became a little more enticing to 135 million people, with users of Spotify’s Free tier now able to stream on the Sonos platform.
More more than half of Spotify’s users currently listening through the free tier, it’s not an insignificant update from both companies.
Even more so now that the entry point to the Sonos family is just £100 with the Ikea Syfonisk bookshelf speaker.

Of course, Spotify Free is a more limited rung on its streaming ladder, only giving you access to on-demand playlists and shuffled albums, with a limited number of skips. You also have to put up with adverts.
But this is a great move to bring the price of entry down, effectively making any Sonos speaker ready to play music for no cost out of the box.
You can stream Spotify Free via Spotify Connect or using the Sonos App. The latter is getting an update right now that adds the new support, along with an improved navigation feature.
You’ll also be able to control Spotify Free playback using Google Assistant, either using a Sonos speaker with the assistant baked in, or one that’s connected to a smart speaker. Sadly, Alexa still doesn’t play nicely with the free Spotify tier, but hopefully this latest announcement will spur a change.
