Live feeds from newer Nest Cams and Doorbell using Chromecast Google TV
Google is rolling out an update, enabling users of its most recent Nest Doorbell and Cams devices to stream their feeds direct to the TV – a much requested feature that’s been a long time coming and one that has been available to the ancient Nest Cams forever.
The streaming works via Chromecast with Google TV, and can be activated via the Chromecast Voice Remote or other Google Assistant-enabled smart speakers – “Hey Google, show me the front door camera on my TV”.
Guide: How to stream your Nest camera to a Google Chromecast
It’s an incredibly useful feature meaning you can check in on different rooms around your home without leaving the sofa, as well as checking that really is the pizza delivery before getting up to answer the door.
So useful, in fact, that it’s actually an existing feature (found on older devices such as the wired Google Nest Doorbell) that’s now been rolled out to the newer Nest cameras, which didn’t previously support it. Better late than never, we suppose.
Buyers guide: The best smart doorbells available
Google has confirmed that: all Nest Cams and Nest Doorbells will be supported, including the devices that were released last year: the Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery), Nest Cam (indoor, wired), Nest Cam with floodlight and Nest Doorbell (battery).
The update should be rolled out across this week, so just make sure that your Nest Cams are connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast and you’ll gain the ability automatically.
