Tapo Smart Battery Video Doorbell
TP-Link has taken the covers off of the first smart video doorbell under its Tapo brand – the Tapo Smart Battery Video Doorbell.
It’s not the first TP-Link smart video doorbell, of course; the Kasa Smart Doorbell went live back in 2021. But TP-Link has two smart home brands, for reasons nobody really knows, and this is – we’re assured – the first Tapo model to hit the market.
Also know as the less-catchy-but-less-of-a-mouthful Tapo D230S1, this battery powered doorbell is going on sale in the UK and Europe later this month, with a US launch to follow.
With a rechargeable battery on board promising a 180 day lifecycle between charges, the Tapo D230S1 goes up against the likes of the Blink Video Doorbell and the recently launched Aqara Video Doorbell G4, but boasts a much heftier price tag than those battery-powered-rivals.
At £149.99, it’s more on a par with the better know smart buzzers from the likes of Nest and Ring.

However, you are getting a pretty good bang for your buck with local microSD storage (up to 512GB) and 2K 5MP color night vision being two of the standout features.
Also on board is smart AI detection, 160-degree head-to-toe view, two-way audio, pre-recorded quick responses and an anti-theft alarm.
It’s both Alexa and Google Home compatible, so you should be able to get announcements on your smart speakers.
In the box, along with the doorbell itself and some mounting wedges, you’ll also get a chime that doubles up as a hub.
It’s in this hub that you can insert a microSD card should you prefer that to Tapo’s Care cloud option (which ranges from free to $11.99 / £11.99 monthly), and there’s also an Ethernet port for you to wire the system to your router.
As mentioned up top, the Tapo Smart Battery Video Doorbell will be available to order later in July, priced at £149.99 direct from TP-Link.
