Company behind UK security system ceases trading - leaving users in the lurch
If you’re a Boundary Smart Home Alarm user then we’re afraid you’re not going to like this news: the company behind the smart security system has gone bust.
A statement from Boundary Technologies Limited states that the company “has ceased to trade and is not in a position to provide any products or services to new or existing customers.”
It advises existing and potential new users that “the company is no longer in a position to provide ongoing technical support to customers and cannot take new orders or fulfil any existing orders” and that “it is not possible at this stage to confirm the length of time that the company’s system may remain in operation“.
A date of 10 March 2023 is touted as a potential shut down date.
That’s a hammer blow to anyone who has paid from £309 for a starter system, right up to around £800 for the top-of-the line package.
UK-based Boundary Technologies actually offered two types of smart alarm security system; a DIY version that you would install yourself, with a similar level of protection to a Ring Alarm, and a professionally fitted system that added an extra layer of protection whereby there would be police dispatch on the alarm being triggered.
With the professional installation the Boundary Alarm became an official Grade 2 alarm system.
However, it’s likely that the statement alluding to “no technical support” and not committing to providing a service, means that both DIY and pro users are now left with a bricked system.
Even with a DIY system, in which some components would operate locally within your home using Z-Wave and RFID, there is still the need for the base unit to communicate to the Boundary app and smart voice assistants such as Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa using Wi-Fi and the cloud.
With no company in operation backing this up; it’s highly likely the system won’t work at all in just a few days time.
We’ve reached out to the liquidators to ask this question specifically and we’ll update this story if we hear back.
It’s a real shame, not just for users who have coughed up for a Boundary system, but for the category as a whole as it really was a great system that took on the big names in the category such as Simplisafe and Abode.
If you’re a Boundary user you can email the liquidators for more info; but we wouldn’t get your hopes up for any kind of refund.
