Matter over Wi-Fi smart lights work inside and out
Nanoleaf is the latest smart light specialist to get the festive spirit with the Essentials Matter Smart Holiday String Lights going live ahead of the Holidays.
Quite possibly the first Matter compatible Christmas decorations (Hue Festiva is only Matter enabled using the Hue hub, don’t forget), the Essentials Matter Smart Holiday String Lights use Matter over Wi-Fi, and not Matter over Thread as per the Nanoleaf Matter Essentials line-up that went live earlier this year.
Like the Hue Festivia and holiday smart lights we’ve seen from the likes of Govee, the Nanoleaf Essentials Matter Smart Holiday String Lights are designed to either wrap around your tree or decorate walls, pillars or features both inside and out – they are IP44 certified, which means they can withstand water splashes and light rain.
In total, you’re getting 20m of coverage, with 2 length of 10m light strings that connect, and a 2m cable to get them powered up.
There are 250 individually addressable LEDs, meaning you can choose to have each one a totally different color, or create blends in the Nanoleaf app. There are more than 16 million colors on offer, with a 2700 – 6500K

There are, of course, a ton of pre-set scenes to choose from from Nanoleaf too, including the likes of “Holiday Magic… with vibrant cascades of color for entertaining”, or “Crackling Fireplace… to create a cosy atmosphere.”
As per the likes of the Nanoleaf Lines and Nanoleaf Shapes, the Essentials Matter Smart Holiday String Lights also pack in a microphone so they are able to sync up with your holiday tunes via the Rhythm Music Visualiser feature.
And, if you’ve got a Nanoleaf 4D, they can also be used in the Sync+ feature too.
If you don’t want to add them to your home Wi-Fi, either through the Nanoleaf app or via a Matter controller, you can also control them using Bluetooth, as long as your smartphone is in range.
