The trio will likely become the first Matter products in the smart home
Eve has announced plans to bring a Matter firmware update to its Eve Energy, Eve Motion and Eve Door & Window, meaning the device maker could become the first to offer working Matter products in the wild.
Announced during the Matter Launch Event in Amsterdam, the free update will be landing on the company’s Thread-packing smart plug and sensors on 12 December to enable support for the new smart home standard.
The company has also revealed that the rest of its Thread-enabled products will receive the OTA firmware update next year, while devices with Matter built-in directly will start shipping in Q1 2023.
Eve has been preparing for this moment for quite a while now, as we know, with the company at IFA in September that an Android version of the Eve app will be ready before the end of the year.
That timeline has now been pushed back to early 2023, and, until then, Android users will still be able to control their compatible Eve devices, providing they’ve been set up with a Matter-supported app (like Alexa or Google Home) on an iOS device initially.
Crucially, as well, these Matter-supported Eve devices will need a Thread border router in order to work, as they can’t access Bluetooth. This is in contrast to Nanoleaf’s Matter devices, then, also announced as part of the Matter launch event, with the company’s Shapes, Lines or Essentials lights able to act as border routers.
Our team at The Ambient is right in the mix at the Matter Launch event, so we’re hoping to get some live demonstrations of just how the Eve trio will work over the standard.
Until then, though, you can check out the rest of the latest news from the Launch Event in our dedicated Matter hub.
