The smart switch aficionados are getting in on the act
Brilliant has announced plans to join the Connectivity Standards Alliance, meaning its crop of smart switches and home controllers will receive full Matter support in 2023.
Update: Brilliant Plug-In Panel Home Control review
With Matter-enabled devices now beginning to ship, it’s a natural move for a brand that has always been one of the few to support all the major platforms from the get-go, whether it was Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit or Samsung SmartThings.
It’s not yet clear when in the coming year the company’s products will begin to link up with other Matter devices, though we’d guess that it’ll be sooner rather than later.
It won’t just be its own line of devices it’ll be working on, either, with its place in the Matter Working Group also meaning the company will be lending its hand on initiatives in the wider smart controller space.
“Matter promises to simplify the connectivity layer, allowing us to continue our focus on providing the best-unified user experience,” said Aaron Emigh, CEO, and Co-Founder of Brilliant.
“By joining the Connectivity Standards Alliance, we will be active participants in educating consumers on the benefits and the experiences that can be unlocked while shaping and defining how the standard will evolve and expand into new areas, including the emerging home builder and multifamily channels.”
It’s certainly all good news for those already embedded with Brillaint’s home controllers and switches, and keeps it among the key players in this niche.
However, this is also one that’s become increasingly competitive over the last few years, with cheap and solid options now available from the likes of Lutron, TP-Link and Wemo. As we discovered in our old-gen Brilliant review, it’s also pretty difficult to get set up with, despite being probably the most advanced-looking.
Most of what Brilliant does best is also widely available in smart speakers with displays, like the Google Nest Hub or Amazon Echo Show lineup, with many of those also set to become lynchpins of the Matter smart home.
Either way, stay tuned for more on Brilliant and Matter, as we’ll be keeping an eye on when exactly full support will be rolling out.
