Users can now request to test out new features before they go live
Google is preparing to expand its ‘Preview Program’ to include the Home app on Android, providing early access for some users to test out new features in the app.
Just like it already does for its Chromecast, Nest Hub displays and Nest speakers, an APK teardown spotted by 9to5Google indicates that Google will soon allow users to request an invite to the early tester program.
Google warns that testing these early features may cause the Home app’s performance to turn inconsistent, but the upside, of course, is that it could allow those accepted onto the program to get the jump on upcoming features.
Again, if Google allows it, you’ll also be able to provide feedback if you have ideas on how to improve a feature, as well as report issues with some features.
Naturally, you’re also able to opt out at any time and switch back to the regular version of the app.
Interestingly, this Preview Program appears just a few weeks after the ‘Google Nest Trusted Tester program’ on Centercode.
It’s possible that these two things are essentially the same thing, though the latter did ask for personal details in the sign-up process, whereas the Preview Program doesn’t.
For those interested, it’s very easy to chance your arm at enrolling – if you tap this Preview Program sign-up link from your Android device, you’ll be taken straight to a page in the Google Home app where you can request an invite.
Once that’s complete, it’s really just a case of whether Google accepts you. Godspeed.
