Only Android users will initially be able to access the new standard
Google has announced that the smart home standard Matter is now rolling out to a selection of Nest devices and Android devices running the Google Home app.
After Eve became the first company to enable Matter on its products earlier this week, this represents another significant milestone for the platform.
Google becomes the first of the ‘Big Tech’ founding members behind Matter – a collection that also includes Amazon, Apple and Samsung – to complete this initial phase, a move that should instantly help improve the interoperability between devices and ease of setup in the home.
Announced in a blog post, Google notes that it has updated millions of Google Nest smart speakers, routers and displays as part of the rollout, as well as millions of phones and tablets running at least Android 8.1 and Google Play Services 22.48.14.
Naturally, the appropriate Google Nest devices – which we’ve listed below – will also require the latest firmware. And this list isn’t yet complete, either, with Google indicating that Nest Wifi and Nest Thermostat devices will receive Matter support next year.
As part of the update, Google has also revealed that Fast Pair on Android is gaining Matter support, too, meaning you should be able to quickly and easily add a new device to the Home app (or another Matter-friendly app).
For those of you running the Google Home app on iOS, however, you’ll have to wait until early next year for Matter support.
