Multi-room audio giant snaps up Bluetooth specialist startup
Sonos headphones have been doing the rounds on the tech rumor mills for a couple of years now but there could be some light at the hearsay tunnel.
A report over on Protocol states that Sonos has snapped up Louisville, Kentucky-based Bluetooth audio startup T2 Software.
A follow up on The Verge claims this acquisition could be good news for the much anticipated Sonos headphones, stating that “T2 had been working on implementations of the new Bluetooth LE Audio standard and LC3 codec, which delivers better audio quality at lower bitrates for improved headphone battery life.”
That report also mentions a LinkedIn post from Pete Pedersen, Sonos VP, Global Marketing & Communications which mentions:
“Sonos is looking to partner with a thoughtful, creative, and innovative integrated marketing firm for one of the most ambitious projects in our history.”
It was around this time last year that the images below, from the German Patent and Trademark Office, landed, hot on the heels of a design we saw from the US equivalent in 2020.
Presumably a pair of Sonos headphones would sit in within a Sonos system as any other ‘speaker’ from the brand but, obviously, offer a more personal listening experience.
As per Apple’s AirPod range and HomePod smart speakers, a seamless audio handoff would presumably be a feature too; for example you could be listening to your Sonos headphones on your commute home and then ping the audio straight to your home speakers when you walk through the front door.
Exciting times ahead then for Sonos fans.
Disclaimer: To be clear, that main image is a crude Photoshop job I just knocked up and is NOT anything official from Sonos. I normally wouldn’t bother worrying but Sonos did just successfully sue Goggle, so I’m not taking any chances.
