New Day 1 Editions devices include smart cuckoo clock and sticky note printer
Update: It was a flop
Amazon’s Day 1 Editions program is branching out to the smart home – and the retail giant wants you to crowdfund its new connected Alexa devices.
The Build It initiative, which has just gone live, sees three new Alexa-compatible gadgets available for pre-order, but there’s a twist; these devices will only get built if enough people commit to buying them.
The pre-order goal phase for the three new devices – a Smart Sticky Note Printer, a Smart Nutrition Scale, and a Smart Cuckoo Clock – is set to 30 days.
Amazon says that if the pre-order goal isn’t made, the devices will never see the light of day. People who pre-ordered won’t be charged in this case; it’s not the Kickstarter Wild West, this is Amazon.
That probably won’t happen though – already all three campaigns are well on their way to hitting their targets.
Our favorite is the Smart Cuckoo Clock which, like the Echo Wall Clock, works with your Alexa timers and reminders.

You link it to an Alexa smart speaker and it will use its 60 LEDs, mechanical pop-out cuckoo bird, and built-in speakers for timers and alarms.
It’s cute as heck.
Next up is the Smart Sticky Note Printer, which is a thermal printer so you won’t need to ever buy ink.

You sync it up with Alexa to ask things like, “Print a reminder to post my tax return”, “Print my calendar for today”, or “Print a sudoku puzzle.”
Lastly, there’s a Smart Nutrition Scale that works with Alexa for hands-free, instant access to nutritional information for thousands of ingredients and food based on its weight.

You can say things like “Alexa, ask Smart Scale how much sugar is in these grapes,” or “Alexa, ask Smart Scale to weigh 150 calories of cheese.”
All three devices are available to pre-order right now, with shipping estimated for July to September. Pricing is as follows…
Smart Cuckoo Clock – $79.99: PRE-ORDER HERE
Smart Sticky Note Printer – $89.99: PRE-ORDER HERE
