Ecobee has unveiled its new smart thermostat, complete with Alexa built-in. It looks much like a classic Ecobee, but this time it's smarter than ever before.

The new Ecobee SmartThermostat has voice control using Alexa (just like 2017’s Ecobee 4), essentially turning it into another smart speaker inside your home, enabling you to do pretty much everything you’d do with an Amazon Echo. But this time it’s bigger and better, and aims to be a much more useful speaker.

Before we get into the smart stuff, we’ll stick with the thermostat features to start with.

There’s a colour LCD touchscreen to control your home heating and see the current temperature, covered in glass for a slick, stylish look. Inside is a quad-core processor (yeah, in a thermostat), which is there to handle all the Alexa smart stuff and the AI required for the smart heating elements.

Of course, there’s remote heating control and scheduling as you’d expect from an Ecobee system.

Of course, the really interesting thing here is that Alexa is built-in, and by opting for the Ecobee SmartThermostat, you’re essentially adding an Echo speaker into your home.

There are microphones built in for voice control – although there’s no details about how many microphone are in the array.

The Ecobee SmartThermostat doesn’t just have a microphone built in. It also has an improved speaker for listening to news updates or even music and podcasts.

And there’s not just the thermostat element itself. The Ecobee SmartThermostat introduces the SmartSensor, which features a motion sensor and temperature sensor with five years of battery life and a 60 feet range.

This seems to work as a remote thermostatic element, but clearly aims to introduce more home control elements – using motion to determine if people are at home and adjust the control accordingly – much like Nest’s Learning Thermostat.

“We see the smart home emerging as an oasis where great technology can fade into the background and free you from the chaos of everyday life.” said Ecobee CEO, Stuart Lombard.

“We’ve designed the new SmartThermostat with voice control to be the foundation of that vision. It’s packed with more power than ever before to deliver a best-in-class user experience and effortlessly connect you to the solutions and services you love, but also work quietly in the background so you can focus on the things - and people - that matter most.”

The Ecobee SmartThermostat launches today for $249 in the US.It’s available on and via Amazon, Lowes, HomeDepot and Best Buy.
