Lenovo's Google Assistant Smart Display goes on sale

Smart speakers get screens

Lenovo's Smart Display is now here

You could say summer has only now truly arrived with the release of the first of the Google Assistant smart displays.

We've been waiting for them since January and now Lenovo's Smart Display is available to buy for $199 and $249 depending on whether you go for the 8-inch or 10.1-inch models. Note - that smaller size is cheaper than an Amazon Echo Show.

What's a smart display? Well, it's a sort of smart speaker meets tablet that's designed to be propped up around the house and show you - not just tell you - the answers to your everyday queries. That means stuff like directions on maps, recipes, Google Duo and YouTube videos. You can also cast movies and videos from your phone.

The 8-inch Smart Display has a 1280 x 800 HD display and the 10.1-inch has a 1920 x 1200 Full HD display. Both are flanked by 10W speakers.

They can be placed in portrait or horizontal and are available in soft grey and natural bamboo finishes - still they look quite gadgety next to the JBL Link View. There's also a 5MP camera, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

We've got a Lenovo Smart Display in for testing so look out for The Ambient's review coming very soon. There's more smart displays to come from JBL, Archos, LG and Sony. Plus we could also see a Google Home smart display.
