Finally, an easy way to boost your home cinema's sound
Sonos has finally unveiled its long-awaited affordable subwoofer, the Sub Mini.
Until now, those rocking the company’s wares only had the $749 / £749 Sonos Sub to add to their Sonos setup.
Now, with the unveiling of the $429 / £429 Sub Mini, which will be available from 6 October in a black or white matte finish, fans have a much cheaper alternative.
The Sub Mini weighs in at 14 pounds and stands at 12 inches, with Sonos noting that the speaker is designed to be used in small or medium-sized rooms, whereas the original Sub is still best for larger spaces.
The company also recommends the Sub Mini for use alongside the Sonos Beam 2 and Sonos Ray soundbars, as well as the Sonos One and Ikea Symfonisk speakers.
In terms of the technical specs, the Sub Mini will feature a pair of custom woofers in order to generate what Sonos claims will be deep and dynamic low-end sound without the buzz.
That, the company says, is thanks to the woofers both facing inwards and creating a ‘force-canceling effect’ that offsets any distortion.
As you would expect from Sonos, there’s also some digital signal processing here, too. In theory, this is what should maximize the bass response and help the Sub Mini punch above its weight, but only time will tell whether it’s able to do so.
We’ll have the Sub Mini in for testing over the next few weeks, so stick around for our full verdict. And, in the meantime, check out these Sonos tips and tricks to get the most out of your setup.
