IFA 2022: The company is readying itself for Matter
Eve has announced that an Android version of its app will launch later this year, confirming its intentions to expand from being an Apple-only smart home company.
Using the platform of the IFA tech show in Berlin to announce the move, Eve has now ensured that its collection of devices will be compatible with smart ecosystems other than Apple HomeKit.
As it continues to add Thread support across its range of smart home accessories, Eve’s growing crop – which includes the likes of smart sensors, switches and plugs – will, of course, also be compatible with Matter, which in turn opens them up for use alongside Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings.
With Matter currently slated to arrive later this year after several delays, we’d suspect the Android version of the Eve app will launch at roughly the same time, though the specifics aren’t yet clear.
What we do know is that Eve will update Thread-compatible devices to Matter via over-the-air updates upon launch, and, in fact, this is as good an indication as any that Matter itself is indeed ready to launch this time around.
Eve is one of the very few third-party companies to have never offered support beyond just one ecosystem, so this does represent a fairly concrete example of the benefits of Matter.
