RGB panel specialist's new kit takes on the likes of Hue and Govee
Nanoleaf has jumped into the ever-growing TV lighting market with the launch of Nanoleaf 4D, which was first announced back in January at CES 2023.
Essentially a smart LED gradient lightstrip designed to mimic the colors on your shows, movies or games, the Nanoleaf 4D uses a camera that fixes above or below a screen to decipher the lights it needs to use.
It’s the same method we’ve seen used in the past from the likes of Govee Flow and is essentially a more affordable alternative to Hue’s Sync platform; albeit not quite as smart because the Hue system doesn’t need that camera pointed at the screen as it uses a HDMI passthrough box to analyze a picture and display appropriate lighting effects
So, while you will get some great lighting effects behind your TV, it won’t be as ‘real-time’ and awesome as you get with Hue Sync and its Gradient Lightstrip.
But, it’s around half the price, with Nanoleaf 4D pricing starting at $99.99 / £89.99.
Plus Nanoleaf is promising some extras that put it ahead of rivals such as Govee and more on a par with that Hue Sync experience.
The 4D part of the name comes from the 4 Mirror Modes (from 1D to 4D) and the full experience means you can add your existing Nanoleaf RGB lights to the immersive experience; the likes of the Shapes, Lines, Canvas, Light Panels and Essentials are all compatible and you can connect up to 50 devices.
You can even combine the ‘Smart Remap’ tech with Nanoleaf’s Rhythm Music Sync to simultaneously mirror your TV’s visuals and audio.
At CES we were told that the 4D would be Matter compatible but there’s no confirmation of that as of yet; just that it can act as a Thread border router.
We’ll get clarification on that and update this story when we know more.
The Nanoleaf 4D lightstrip attaches to the back of your TV and can be cut to size.
There are two sizes on offer: for screens up to 65 inches ($99.99 / £89.99) and for screens up to 85 inches ($129.99 / £119.99) and they are available to pre-order on 27 June.
In the box you’ll gradient lightstrip, the camera and its mount, a controller, a magnetic privacy cover and four corner brackets.
UPDATE: We heard back from Nanoleaf who told us… “We can’t confirm any dates for Matter upgrades on Wi-Fi-based products at this stage but hope to be able to announce something soon.”
