The Smart Alarm cam will open a live feed when triggered
SimpliSafe has unveiled a new wireless indoor security camera that will allow a monitoring agent to talk to potential intruders.
The unimaginatively-named Smart Alarm Wireless Indoor Security Camera works similarly to other cameras in the company’s range, with motion events working in conjunction with the rest of the SimpliSafe security system.
Unlike other cameras from the company, though, which can allow a SimpliSafe agent access to video in order to help escalate events emergency services, the new Smart Alarm cameras ‘live guard protection’ feature gives the agent the option to communicate with the intruder.
The feature is still in beta, according to SimpliSafe, though it does expect to roll out the option to users as part of the full release before the end of the year.
This new level of monitoring will only be accessible through the Smart Alarm camera, and it’ll also have to be paired with a SimpliSafe base station and the company’s Interactive Monitoring subscription. It’s also opt-in, for those with privacy concerns.
Handily, if you do turn live guard on, the camera’s AI smarts will also help distinguish between pets and people before fully sounding the built-in siren, while a privacy shutter will also cover the camera when your security system is set to ‘Off’ or ‘Home’.
Pricing and full release date details are the only things that remain unclear.
SimpliSafe is offering invitees to buy the camera for a discounted price of $50, and, as we say, things are expected to launch before the end of 2023, but this means it remains to be seen how the Smart Alarm and live guard stacks up against alternative options from the likes of Ring.
