Nearly 4 years later, you can now buy the NFC HomeKit smart lock
Sometimes stuff is shown off at CES in January and fails to come on sale in time for Christmas. That’s the case with the Netatmo Smart Door Lock, which didn’t just miss one Christmas, but three.
First shown off back at CES 2020(!), the Netatmo Smart Lock is finally now available.
However, its late arrival does mean that the competition and technology has evolved rapidly in the meantime, and that – at €379 – it’s hard to see it being a big success.
There’s no Wi-Fi, no Matter, no Thread, no AppleHome Key, heck… there’s not even Bluetooth 5.0.
Instead, the Netatmo Smart Door Lock connects via Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC.
However, it is that NFC inclusion that may just be the saving grace of the device as, if anyone is looking for a smart lock that is essentially offline, then it may just be the answer… especially if they also still crave a physical key.
The standout feature with Netatmo’s first smart lock is the electronic keys. Each key has a NFC chip in it that it uses to communicate locally with the lock.

Made from stainless steel and resembling a traditional key, they come pre-paired to the lock and each one authorizes the door to unlock when the key is put in it. You can sync as many locks as you want and use the same key for each, and you can also activate multiple keys for each lock.
You can also deactivate the NFC chip remotely using Netatmo’s Security smartphone app. So if someone has a key and you don’t want them to get in anymore, just tap a button in the app.
An NFC tag or card would work in the same way but Netatmo’s thinking is that the key form-factor is familiar and comfortable, and may help people make the leap from dumb lock to smart lock.
You can also use the app to lock and unlock the door when you are within Bluetooth range. If you want to let someone in when you’re not home you can’t control the lock remotely but you can send a ‘digital’ key to their smartphone.
Local, off-cloud, control is sort of Netatmo’s thing, so this lock makes a lot of sense for them.
On the physical security side, the lock is designed to withstand both physical and electronic attacks and has EN 15684 and SKG security certifications, making it among the most secure locks in Europe.
The cylinder is made from high-strength stainless steel and is reinforced with an anti-drilling plate, and 3 security pins.
With no motorization or Wi-Fi the lock doesn’t need much power and requires just 4 AA batteries to run for more than a year.
HomeKit compatibility is another selling point here, you can integrate the lock into scenes and do things like have your lights come on and your heating adjust when you unlock the door.
HomeKit will also give you remote control over the lock from outside the house, assuming you have setup a HomeKit hub such as an Apple TV or HomePod, and it is within Bluetooth range of your door.
The Netatmo Smart Door Lock is compatible with doors equipped with a euro cylinder, with a thickness of up to 10cm.
Launching initially in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, with plans for availability in the UK in the near future, it’s €379.99 for the lock itself; a 3 Smart Keys pack is €99.99, individual Smart Keys are €39.99 each, and Extension Kits for 45mm and 40mm door widths are €29.99 apiece.
It’s available to order direct from Netatmo now.
